Hi guys,
The next event on the UQBVC social calendar is coming up Sunday the 2nd of March, the game where everyone can play with black balls, the game that you can play with one beer in your hand, the game you can play whilst dressed up in a silly costume, the game you can play whilst barefoot - it’s the great game of lawn bowls!
![]()
WHAT
Playing lawn bowls, having a beverage or three, chatting and jeering. Come dressed in your finest of white garments to look the part! It’s a great opportunity for our exchange members to sample a bit of Aussie culture and it goes down a lot better than Vegemite, trust me. It’s also a lot of fun, and everyone will get to have a roll.
For more on bowls: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawn_bowls
HOW MUCH
$10 for members, $15 for non-members, pay on the day. We’ll put on some snacks and a BBQ, and there is a bar on site with cheap cheap drinks. Friends/housemates/grannies/partners/lovers/parole officers welcome too.
WHEN
Sunday 2nd of March starting 1:30-2pm, the club stays open until we’re done. If you’re soft, bring a light sweater as its still a bit cold out when the sun goes down.
HOW DO I DRESS?
It’s definitely more fun if you come in theme. This generally means white and poor fashion. Cardigans, tight trousers, or knitted jumpers are all the rage. Surprise us with your ingenuity!

Hello and welcome to the University of Queensland Beach Volleyball Club!
We are a social club devoted to good times, good people and, of course, beach volleyball. We play every Tuesday and Thursday at the UQ beach courts from 5pm till 7pm. Anyone, irrespective of skill level, is welcome and encouraged to come and check out the club and what we’re about. We will have a stall at UQ market day - in the Main Sports Hall in the UQ Gym Complex on the Wednesday of O Week - where you can sign up to our mailing list and get more information about our activities and shenanigans.
If you’d like more information, please feel free to email us at uqbeach (a.t) gmail or simply come down to the courts for a try and see for free… We also have a facebook group if you’re that way inclined…
Membership will set you back $50 (per semester) and this includes all of your court time during club hours and insurance etc. Our social advisor Uncle Rod will be organising a meet and greet in the coming days and we will keep you posted on that.
Look forward to seeing you on the sand,
Jameses
To everyone who turned up and helped us to celebrate the concept of “loose” at the races. It was a really good crowd this year and I can only assume from my experience that everybody had a great - if somewhat hazy - time. The improved organisation on behalf of the races made it a much more enjoyable experience than last year’s schemozzle…
Also a big thanks to Todd for organising the BBQ on Thursday. If anyone would like to put their hand up to do something similar in the future, please feel free… If you have any suggestions about future activities, or ways that we can make things better for you, drop us an email or pull us aside at the courts. Feedback is always welcome…
Hi Guys, we already have 30 people confirmed for our races day…
As most of you should now know, next Wednesday the 15th of August is Brisbane’s show public holiday. Every year we organise a champage breakfast at Guyatt Park followed by a trip to the Ekka Races at Eagle Farm. It is a huge event in the Brisbane calendar and over 38,000 people attended last year’s event. In the past, we’ve found that members (especially internationals) enjoy the opportunity to dress up in their finest suits and dresses (and hats) and experience a day of what it is to get on the piss in Australia.
The details are as follows:
If anyone doesn’t think they’ll make it to Guyatt Park, feel free to meet us at the races (take your map so you know where to find us).
Final Housekeeping Matters…
There’s a bit of a twist this year in that entry numbers are capped at 35,000 for the event. This means that people are strongly encouraged to pre-order tickets from Ticketmaster; preordering means that your ticket will be cheaper ($18 as compared with $25 at the gate), and entry is guaranteed. We will be passing the hat around at the courts this afternoon in case anyone would like us to pre-order their tickets for them, otherwise people can pre-order tickets for themslelves before next wednesday.
If you don’t get a chance to pre-order tickets, or decide on the day that you would like to come, you can still purchase tickets for $25 at the gates. If you are in this position, you are strongly urged to catch the first city cat (10:10) to ensure that you arrive before ticket allocations have been exhausted.
Either way, we will endeavour to make sure you have a cracker of a day.
If you have any queries, come and have a chat to us at the courts or email us here.
Hope to see you all there!!
Jameses
Lastly, anyone who doesn’t want to deal with the crowds and/or the sun can upgrade to the Members’ Bar area for an additional $20 - all information regarding the event can be found at http://www.qtc.org/racing
It’s with a heavy liver and a happy heart that I thank everybody who came along last night and made our first social activity for the semester such an enjoyable one. Also, a huge thankyou to everybody who has already forked out for membership; it’s good to have the ball rolling and know that we have such a good crowd for semester 2.
For those who haven’t paid their membership yet, please try and scrape together the cash and sign up sometime this coming week. The sooner we have an idea of numbers, the sooner and better we can plan things into the future.
The next event in our calendar will the races day champagne breakfast and day party on Wednesday August 15th (pub hol.). Be prepared for some fine weather, fine clothing and fine form.
Lastly, it is with no (small) regret that I announce the imminent departure (again) of one of the club’s stalwarts. After a few false starts and a few broken hearts Abe will be leaving for the greener shores of Sweden to become a professional Tuna fisherman (or something like that). We wish him all the best and hope to have a hit with him in that big beach volleyball court in the sky (or back in Oz if he ever returns). I can also announce that with his departure, the average age of the club will drop significantly, making us a much more attractive proposition for new members. So long Abe and thanks for all the fish…

Hi Guys.
A huge welcome to everybody who came to the courts on Thursday. We hoped you enjoyed yourselves and get your feet sandy many times more. To those who have yet to come down, we look forward to getting sandy with you.
This is a little notice to inform you all that we will be having our MEET AND GREET for semester 2 next Thursday the 2nd of August. It will be held from 8pm at the Regatta (pronounced Gat as in Cat) Hotel, in the upstairs area. It will cost you $10 and in return we are putting on a bar tab etc. In semesters past it has proven to be a great way to kick off the social activities of the club and to get our members mingling. If you think you would feel more comfortable in the company of friends, feel free to invite them along…
We look forward to seeing you all there and hopefully at the courts beforehand.
UQBVC
Hi and welcome to the University of Queensland Beach Volleyball Club. If you are interested in playing beach volleyball either socially or competitively then we are the club for you. Players of all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to come down to the courts for a free try-and-see.
We will have a tent at the Semester 2 Market day on the 25th of July so swing by and come and have a chat to us about playing. For more information about the club, click on the link in the right hand toolbar or email us on uqbeach(at)gmail(dot)com.
Membership is $50 for the semester and is worth every cent. We hold social tournaments and social functions every semester and organise a weekend trip to Byron bay for the club. Check out some of the earlier posts for stories and photos.
Look forward to seeing you in Semester 2,
UQBVC
You can find the first lot of photos from the Fours Tournie here.
Hi Guys,
A quick thankyou to everyone who participated in the social fours tournament on Saturday. It seems it was worth the effort of getting up at 8am afterall… Big contratulations to the Sandy Cracks - comprised of NG, Carl, Paul and Bethany - who took home the inaugral ‘Ballmet of Glory Award’ for best team on the day. Commiserations to Clint and Shu’s team for losing every game, securing the wooden spoon and generally sucking ass.
The BYRON BAY TRIP SEM 1 2007, is slated for the 20-21st of April. We will be heading to Byron on the Friday afternoon and will proceed to run amok, drink alcohol and play beach volleyball until the Sunday afternoon. This is THE social event for UQBVC and we would love as many of you as possible to make the effort to be debaucherous. We need a confirmation of numbers in the next week or so (and money paid in full) so we can go ahead and make a group booking. It will cost $50 for the two nights (of which 100% goes to paying for the dorms). Any money for food, alcohol, early morning kebabs and aloe vera lotion will be on top of this.
If you have any questions, leave a comment, email us, or feel free to have a chat down at the courts.
